On this World Day of Social Justice, The Federation of Unions of South Africa (FEDUSA) stands with the world in renewing our commitment to fairness and equality for all. This year’s theme, “Strengthening a Just Transition for a Sustainable Future,” emphasizes the importance of ensuring fairness and inclusion as we move toward a more sustainable world, addressing the inequalities that still exist in our society 30 years into democracy.
Social justice is fairness, human rights, and the fight against poverty, discrimination, and oppression.
This means that every person, no matter their background or situation, should have equal opportunities and access to resources.
Through our Social Justice Committee (SJC) we are actively engaged in dealing with socio-developmental issues. The SJC stands for freedom, dignity, and equality in the workplace. For the development of men and women in South Africa – for transparency, fair labour practices and upward mobility for all.
As FEDUSA, we believe that social justice is not only the right thing to do but also it is important for development and equality. We understand that social, economic, and environmental problems are connected and must be solved as a collective.
Yesterday, we welcomed the postponement of Budget Speech that arose from ongoing discussions within the Government of National Unity (GNU) regarding proposed tax adjustments, notably the suggested 2% increase in Value-Added Tax (VAT) from 15% to 17%. FEDUSA has consistently expressed concern over tax hikes that disproportionately affect workers and low-income households, especially amidst the prevailing economic challenges, including a crippling cost of living crisis.
On this important day, we urge the South African government, organizations, and individuals to take real action to support social justice. This includes:
• Reducing inequalities – We must challenge unfair policies and practices that lead to poverty and exclusion.
• Ensuring equal opportunities – Everyone should have access to good education, healthcare, decent jobs, and social support.
• Protecting human rights – We must defend basic rights, including freedom of speech, association, and more.
• Supporting marginalised groups – We must listen to and uplift the voices of those who are often ignored and help them fight for their rights.
• Fair and Just Transition – Together, we must ensure a fair transition that creates equal opportunities for everyone, and one is left behind.
By working together, we can create a world where justice and fairness are a reality for everyone.
